G.E.T. Community
Discussion Forum and Message Board

Thinking of hiking all or part of the Grand Enchantment Trail? Go ahead, shout it from the mountain!

Maybe you're looking for a hiking partner, or perhaps you're simply wondering who else might be out here (besides the musk hog and wild sheep). For that matter, it's quite possible you'd just like to trade notes and check reality with others in the fledgling G.E.T. hiking community. Whatever the case, here you are and we're glad to have you!

There are two ways to communicate and contribute here:

  • Discussion Forum

The GET Discussion Forum is a place to interact with others about the trail. From trip planning and prep, to trail conditions and navigation, to walking the walk, or talking the talk thereafter - as long as it relates to the GET, it's on-topic for the forum and anyone is free to contribute. The forum's membership includes prospective and veteran GET hikers, as well as folks with local knowledge of the route. Those who have gone before are more than happy to answer the questions of those who might like to go.

To browse or join the Discussion Forum, click here.

  • Message Board

If you have hiking plans along the GET, are looking for a trail partner, or if you have other announcements that would benefit from prominent, long-term display, consider posting them to the GET Message Board, below. Along with the Discussion Forum, this message board can be a useful way to facilitate further networking - such as by e-mail, phone, or public venue - directly between interested parties.

Just fill out the form at the bottom of this page and we'll add your entry to the message board after reviewing it. Entries will remain on the board for about a year from original date of posting, or we can remove or edit them per request. Oh, and of course we'll alter your email address [with (at) instead of @] in order to prevent spamming. New messages are automatically posted to the Discussion Forum as well, which is where the online trail community hangs out.

Even if your plans are only vague and tentative, we encourage you to "use the board" for the purpose of building momentum within the trail community.

(Posted 1/16/10): Is there going to be anyone out there this early in the year? I have Feb/March off this year---so I'm starting about Feb 15th. Should take me about the same amount of time as the AZT. If the snow is too deep I'll take low route around it.

(Posted 12/06/09): What an awesome site. Way more detailed info than since the last time I checked out the site - that would have been a couple of years ago - and what a beautiful presentation! Thanks Brett for all you dreaming and work on this. Considering hiking this intriguing trail as part of a larger hiking adventure in the S.W. in spring 2011.

(Posted 10/29/09): I had the opportunity to hike westbound through NM last fall and can hardly wait to see what the AZ GET has to offer. If all goes well with weather and health and such I hope to fly to Phoenix in mid Nov and hike eastbound to Alma/ Glenwood where I got snowed out last year. Hoping for another fall full of frigid nights, not too much snow, and many days of not quite knowing where I am, but knowing I am finding my true direction on the Grand Enchantment Trail. Oh- and if all goes to plan (like that ever happens..) I will get to turn 30 while I am out there- a 30 miler on my 30?

(Posted 8/21/09): Hello, I plan to thru-hike the G.E.T. westbound starting on or just after October 1st. I plan to finish just before Thanksgiving. Anyone else going to be out there? This sounds like my kind of trail, wild and lightly used.

(Posted 2/12/09): I'm considering hiking a couple segments come the end of May with a few friends. I'm considering going through either the San Mateo Mts. or the Magdalenas. I'd rather the prior though because I've never been there. This would be segments 28, 29 and about half of 30 to get to FR 107 to be picked up. The other option would be to start at FR 107 and hike into the town of Magdalena. So for questions: how likely is it that the guide book chapters for these segments will be done by May? Barring that, the most helpful information would be on how to get from say, I-25, to the G.E.T. starting at segment 28. Can you drive on Burma Rd (we'll have a jeep to take us there)? I'd like to drive as far as possible to start. Walking from Monticello would add an entire day to our trip pretty much. I'll be buying the Topo CD in a couple weeks which will hopefully answer most of our questions. Any general words of wisdom about these segments would be handy as well. For instance, are there any particularly difficult to spot intersections where we need to switch trails? Missing forest service signs seem to be par for the course in the Magdalenas...

(Posted 1/2/09): I too am reading everything here and waiting till I am liberated from the cycle of gainful employment. Two more years and I will be free to hike all the interesting hikes in this great land of ours. At that time I will be 60 myself and hope to hike east to west in the fall of 2011. Until then I try to stay in shape and backpack in the Sierras every summer. Thanks for writing about your adventures here as I for one appreciate hearing about others travels and explorations.

(Posted 12/19/08): Terrific website. Have pored over every word, and will again several times I'm sure. Do you have a record for the oldest thru-hiker? I'll be 60 then ... (Ed. note: As far as we know, it's the author, who successfully thru-hiked the GET in 2005 at age 33. The field is wide open.)
