(Posted 8/26/10): Hi - I'll be ready to escape civilization in early October. I'm heading west from ABQ to Safford. Look forward to more comm's from GET'ers . This is a solo excursion though I hope to meet fellow wanderers along the route for a chat.

(Posted 8/3/10): Hoping to hitchhike to ABQ toward the last few days of September. After lining up some maildrops, I'll be hiking west as far as I can by November 8th, which will hopefully put me to the Superstitions and PHX... I will be uploading photos and text from my thru-hike starting at the end of September on my blog. I really want to share the beauty of this region with as many people as possible: http://ultrapayne.blogspot.com

(Posted 7/29/10): Click here for Postholer journal and more info about hike preparations. This will be my first attempt at long distance hiking. So, I am not promising anything except to try and make a beginning. I will be happy to discuss plans with any prospective hikers. I live in Albuquerque, NM and am familiar with the NM and AZ terrain covered by the hike.

(Posted 12/06/09): What an awesome site. Way more detailed info than since the last time I checked out the site - that would have been a couple of years ago - and what a beautiful presentation! Thanks Brett for all you dreaming and work on this. Considering hiking this intriguing trail as part of a larger hiking adventure in the S.W. in spring 2011.

(Posted 10/29/09): I had the opportunity to hike westbound through NM last fall and can hardly wait to see what the AZ GET has to offer. If all goes well with weather and health and such I hope to fly to Phoenix in mid Nov and hike eastbound to Alma/ Glenwood where I got snowed out last year. Hoping for another fall full of frigid nights, not too much snow, and many days of not quite knowing where I am, but knowing I am finding my true direction on the Grand Enchantment Trail. Oh- and if all goes to plan (like that ever happens..) I will get to turn 30 while I am out there- a 30 miler on my 30?

(Posted 2/12/09): I'm considering hiking a couple segments come the end of May with a few friends. I'm considering going through either the San Mateo Mts. or the Magdalenas. I'd rather the prior though because I've never been there. This would be segments 28, 29 and about half of 30 to get to FR 107 to be picked up. The other option would be to start at FR 107 and hike into the town of Magdalena. So for questions: how likely is it that the guide book chapters for these segments will be done by May? Barring that, the most helpful information would be on how to get from say, I-25, to the G.E.T. starting at segment 28. Can you drive on Burma Rd (we'll have a jeep to take us there)? I'd like to drive as far as possible to start. Walking from Monticello would add an entire day to our trip pretty much. I'll be buying the Topo CD in a couple weeks which will hopefully answer most of our questions. Any general words of wisdom about these segments would be handy as well. For instance, are there any particularly difficult to spot intersections where we need to switch trails? Missing forest service signs seem to be par for the course in the Magdalenas...

(Posted 1/2/09): I too am reading everything here and waiting till I am liberated from the cycle of gainful employment. Two more years and I will be free to hike all the interesting hikes in this great land of ours. At that time I will be 60 myself and hope to hike east to west in the fall of 2011. Until then I try to stay in shape and backpack in the Sierras every summer. Thanks for writing about your adventures here as I for one appreciate hearing about others travels and explorations.

(Posted 2/10/08): I'm planning on hiking sections one through four or five with my son in March 08. If anyone has or is planning to hike the Walnut Canyon alternate or section 3 this spring I would love to hear about it from eyes on the ground. Also my son who is eleven is hoping to be the first kid to hike the GET en toto. Any other kids on the trail? I've been section hiking the CDT for 7 years now and ran across the GET on the web. Awesome job blisterfree. We live in Albuquerque so if I can be of assistance to section or through hikers drop us a line. Anyone through hiking this spring?

(Posted 12/27/07): Flying from NY to AZ for the GET I've read so much about. I've arranged transport via plane, train, and rental car to get to trailhead for segment #1 but am having difficulty arranging transport from Superior (end of Segment #2) back into Phoenix. No rental car agencies, taxi services, or bus lines that I can find online. Any suggestions? Please advise!

If you are a thruhiker and are in need of a shuttle, place to stay, etc. Please contact me via email. Like the other guy who posted, I'm a former PCT hiker and am familiar w/ long distance hikers' needs. I'd also like the chance to return the good will I've received on my own distance hikes.

(Posted 11/09/07): First let me commend you on this absolutely first class website...very professional and well thought out. Just browsing through it has me excited about hiking the GET. My hobby is long distance backpacking and I have journalled my previous hikes on www.trailjournals.com where it appears I will be the first to journal a thru-hike of The Grand Enchantment Trail. During the next several weeks I will begin my pre-hike journal and I will have more questions as I start to do some planning. My last couple of hikes, The Florida Trail and The Buckeye Trail were solo. I would very much like a hiking partner for the GET. Before you jump in and join me though, please read some of my journals to get a flavor for my personality. It does not appear that the GET is an easy trail to follow. If this is the case, that is not a problem because during my last two hikes I found myself relying on blazing that was inadequate and "herd paths" that weren't there. Also, I think if I do it with someone I will be less likely to get irritated when I lose my way. My start date is very much uncertain at this point as it lools like I may be re-hiking The Florida Trail this January thru early March. It may very well be earlier.

(Posted9/14/07): Thru-lopping season is here again. A "thru-lop" is a traditional long distance hike with a bit of self-serve trail maintenance thrown in, loppers on the pack and at the ready. Other goals include guidebook reconnaissance, as well as exploration of several substantial new route options, all in preparation for what I hope and expect will be a "best yet" GET experience for spring 2008 hikers.

(Posted 9/4/06): My next big project is the Great Western Loop, a 6,500-mile "best of the West" tour that consists of the PCT, PNT, CDT, and GET. I will be using the western half of the GET to cover part of the distance between the CDT and PCT. (editor's note: Andy will reach the GET portion of the GWL in October 07. Visit www.andrewskurka.com for Andy's updates from the trail.)

(Posted 8/20/07): Hi all, My husband and I are looking to do a long distance hike for 6-8 weeks this January and February. The GET looks simply amazing, but we need info on the feasibility of thru-hiking using snowshoes and/or cross-country skis when necessary. Based on the winter, we would probably start in Albuquerque and hope that we miss the spring snows by hiking west. Any input for our idea (just found out about the GET this weekend, so we are in the baby steps of planning) is most welcome!

(Posted 3/2/07): Spring hiking season is upon us. :) I'm planning to begin on the early side at PHX and hike as far as Monticello, along the way flagging, cairning, and lopping as needed. Will mostly walk the main route, incl. Aravaipa Canyon, but will take the Turkey Creek & Black Rock alts. (Seg 8) and explore the San Mateo Pk & Burma Rd alts. (Seg 27-28). Will note trail, snow, and fording conditions throughout, and report to the GET Forum when possible from towns. Or leave me a voice mail with call-back # if in need of more timely info.

2 segments, 50 mi., 5 days
(Posted 2/16/07): We hiked the first two segments just after Thanksgiving, 06. Weather was excellent although we did wake to frozen water bottles a couple times and some night wind. Helps to catch an early start to make miles because it's dark around 5 p.m. along the creekbeds. Found water at all (but only) guide indications. One small addition: found larger pools at Clover Spring some 300 yards down creek. Had hoped to do more but got too ambitious coming down out of the higher country and Jay developed some nasty downhill blisters. We'll be back to do more!
