Hikers looking to roughly halve the 130 mile distance between on-route resupply options at Polvadera and Tijeras might consider detouring to the small town of Mountainair, an 18 mile hitchhike east from the GET crossing of well-travelled US 60 near Abo Canyon. Mountainair is a small ranching-oriented town offering a modest array of services, and is also home to the headquarters for Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument. Organized into districts, each at a different cultural site, this monument showcases some of the most well-preserved ancient pueblo dwellings in the Southwest. The Abo district lies 9 miles east of the GET crossing at US 60, and is a worthwhile detour if you have time.
