Guidebook
Detailed trail descriptions for each of the route's 39 segments
UPDATE
2/8/2012: Planning a spring 2012 adventure? Topo
Map Set CD v1.81 is now available. This represents a minor
update to previous version 1.80; current owners of that version
can update, as desired, either by ordering the v1.81 CD as a complimentary
upgrade, or preferably by downloading the relevant material from
our website (high-speed internet connection recommended). To obtain
a link to the download page, v1.8 owners please contact
us here.
As
of February 6 the guidebook chapters, indexed below, have received
updates as needed. These, likewise, tend to be fairly minor in
scope. Most of the changes center around the Arizona Trail portions
of the route (GET segments 3 & 4 in particular, where newly-built
trail miles have recently come on line). Please note that the
"last chapter edit" date (in the table below, at right)
for all chapters receiving an update this time around appears
in bold red typeset for easy reference. The PDF version of the
full guidebook has also been updated to reflect the latest information.
In
addition, the Water Chart has
been updated to include fall 2011 field reports. You can also
view the very latest peer-provided water chart info (in advance
of your hike) and contribute (during or post-hike) to a Google
Doc version of the water chart here.
The Google Doc water chart is used to update the static PDF chart
each season.
(The
Town Guide received an update
just this past fall and will remain unchanged for the time being.)
Make
sure you'll be carrying along the most up-to-date information
before hitting the trail this spring. And watch the weather forecast!
After a fairly wet November and early December, dry La Nina conditions
are now in effect, and ongoing drought seems likely across the
Southwest. Consider starting an eastbound thru-hike earlier (March)
rather than later (April).
Additional
guidebook chapters will also be added below as time allows, but
it'll be a while yet (months, possibly many) before the guide
is finished due to the massive amount of time and effort it entails.
(Hikers we've heard from seem to be getting by ok with the resources
currently available.) Starting with Segment 21, all subsequent
chapters will initially appear in rough draft form, with the intent
of providing basic planning and navigation info beyond what the
map set alone can provide.
