G.E.T. Segment "Challenge Factor" ratings

1 = easiest (just a straightforward walk from here to there, without any noteworthy challenges; check the maps every now and then to stay on course)

2 = somewhat easier than average (segment may involve occasional route-finding, challenging trail conditions, noteworthy elevation gain, or an extended water carry, but certainly not all of them nor all at once and none too involving)

3 = average (segment may involve occasional route-finding, challenging trail conditions, noteworthy elevation gain, or an extended water carry, sometimes more than one of these challenges simultaneously, but nothing too extreme for those accustomed to hiking a route such as this; typical GET fare)

4 = above average in difficulty (segment is likely to involve some route-finding, challenging trail conditions, noteworthy elevation gain, or an extended water carry, and probably more than one of these challenges simultaneously; good idea to be prepared for these segments with the requisite skill and attitude; on a thru-hike, one hopefully tends to adapt to this level of challenge over the course of days and weeks)

5 = most difficult (segment [main 'redline' route] will involve route-finding, challenging trail conditions, noteworthy elevation gain, or an extended water carry, and probably more than one of these challenges simultaneously; all should get ready for a challenging and hopefully rewarding adventure with the requisite skill and attitude)

rf = route finding (cross-country and/or map/gps-intensive navigation may be more than momentarily required at times in this segment)

tc = trail conditions (vague, overgrown, rocky or otherwise challenging trail, blowdowns, seasonal snowpack, frequent creek crossings, or the like may be routinely encountered in this segment)

eg = elevation gain (prolonged and/or repeated climbs or descents occur over the course of this segment)

wc = water carry (water sources are typically less available at convenient intervals in this segment, leading to longer carries and more packweight)

Letter codes are listed in guidebook chapter headings in order of average significance, from most significant for that particular segment to least significant.
